The Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals will be ending after season 5. First premiering in 2013 after the popularity of villain-turned-antihero Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) and his family of ancient vampires on The Vampire Diaries skyrocketed, The Originals debuted on The CW and followed the adventures of Klaus in the city of New Orleans with his ever-loyal brother Elijah (Daniel Gillies), sister Rebekah (Claire Holt), the mother of his child werewolf Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), his adopted vampire son Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) and an abundance of witches, werewolves, vampires, ghosts and enemies out to thwart the family’s dream of an “always and forever” happy ending.

Last season, fans finally got to meet Klaus’ adorable daughter Hope (Summer Fontana) as a child, and will get to see her as a teenager played by actress Danielle Rose Russel when season 5 returns some time in 2018. Alas, all good things must come to an end though – especially in the TV world, when series can sometimes drag on far past their expiration date.

Today, The Originals showrunner Julie Plec announced on Twitter that the vampire drama will be coming to an end after this past seasons dramatic conclusion with the Mikaelson family being separated, once again, after learning that they must never see each other again in order to protect young Hope from the Hollow:

The show’s star, Joseph Morgan, also announced the end of the show on Twitter, and thanked The Originals fans for their support over the years:

While it’s sad that the spin-off is getting buried so quickly after The Vampire Diaries came to a close, it’s probably for the best that series goes out on a high note while the writing is still fresh, rather than dragging it out longer with weaker storylines. This also does not mean the end for The Vampire Diaries world Plec has created; there have been talks about a possible spin-off featuring Caroline Forbes (Candice King) and her boarding school for magically inclined children, where Hope currently is, which was introduced during the season finale of The Vampire Diaries.

For now though, fans are going to have to wait and see of any news comes out of SDCC regarding the future of The Vampire Diaries world, and any further spin-offs.
